  • [H4] The first day of the conference will address the need to build more inclusive and sustainable economies post-pandemic. Specific topics explored include whether reframing climate change as a human rights risk might propel greater action, whether a sustainable economy can be truly inclusive, and – in the same month as the world convenes in the UK for COP26 – a deep-dive into what is needed to ‘achieve net-zero’. We will conclude the day with a panel discussion exploring the business case for economic inclusion, beyond the obvious moral imperative.
  • [H4] •Antonio Zappulla, CEO, Thomson Reuters Foundation
  • [H4] Emerging from crisis: Learning from the leaders spearheading inclusive economies
  • [H4] From worsening storms, droughts, floods and wildfires to rising sea levels, climate change is a real, visible risk. Could reframing climate change as a human rights threat and a legal issue help drive faster action? We hear from those pioneering this groundbreaking approach.

  • [H4] A more sustainable economy could create millions of new jobs globally in everything from solar and wind power to building out electric vehicle charging networks. But how can we ensure that quality jobs will replace those that are lost? And how can this transition be managed to avoid economic disenfranchisement and reactionary backlash?
  • [H4] •Dr Sandie Okoro, Senior Vice President and General Counsel, World Bank
  • [H4] •Sharan Burrow, General Secretary, International Trade Union Confederation
  • [H4] Governments and the private sector are making official pledges to achieve carbon neutrality in the next three decades with some businesses even committing to becoming carbon negative and removing historical carbon emissions. Aiming for net zero will require a number of wide-changing adjustments, including new forms of investment and different ways to regulate how people travel, consume and are taxed. We explore the scale of the challenge and some of the practical implications for ordinary citizens.

  • [H4] The ESG framework is increasingly being considered by investors and the private sector as the emerging universal framework to track and monitor sustainability performance and societal impact. Whilst significant progress has been made in regard to the adoption and monitoring of E and G indicators, the tracking of social output and impact is lagging behind. As legislative frameworks increasingly shift towards mandatory human rights due diligence, we debunk some of the common misconceptions and explore some concrete tools and approaches to enable a full and meaningful adoption of S indicators, assessing the tangible impact such adoption could have on the rights of workers, socio-economic inequality and diversity and inclusion.

  • [H4] A 2020 report from the World Bank Group showed that the world could achieve a ‘gender dividend’ of $172 trillion by closing gaps in lifetime labour earnings between women and men. Another 2020 study by Citigroup found that over the past 20 years, race-based inequalities cost the GDP of the United States approximately $16 trillion. These are just two of many data points proving that more inclusive economies would be stronger and more prosperous. What trends are we seeing and what would real progress look like?

  • [H4] The second day of the Conference will explore the link between media sustainability and media independence, emerging digital rights risks in the Global South, online harassment against female journalists, diversity in the newsroom, emerging models of cyber sovereignty, and the role of philanthropy in supporting independent media.
  • [H4] •Antonio Zappulla, CEO, Thomson Reuters Foundation
  • [H4] Independent journalism is beset by ongoing challenges – from limiting access to data, to punitive legislation and even threat or actual harm to reporters themselves. Meanwhile, dire economic repercussions created by a drop in revenues are threatening the long-term financial sustainability of many news outlets, placing their future at the mercy of business, individual or state control. Vulnerable to the highest bidder, how can editorial independence be safeguarded? We look at the impact of recent events on press freedom and independent journalism around the world, and explore its implications for the next decade.

  • [H4] Participants in the Trust Conference Changemakers Programme share their innovative work.
  • [H4] The past 20 years have witnessed an exponential growth and adoption of digital technologies. Two governance models are emerging. In the West, technology companies and governments are struggling to reframe their relationship, with policy makers and civil society increasingly keen to safeguard democracy and human rights. In China, where the digital ecosystem is much more open to government scrutiny and regulation, Chinese leaders cite greater efficiency of state services and security in a push to protect and promote their models of digital governance. We look at the issue of cyber sovereignty and its many repercussions on people and society.

  • [H4] The Thomson Reuters Foundation, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and Media Legal Defence Initiative introduce the ‘Legal Network for Journalism At Risk’, a new joint initiative to expand the reach and impact of legal assistance available to journalists through better coordination between support organisations. Ensuring that journalists and media outlets receive adequate legal representation, free of charge, means that different forms of support need to be provided throughout the duration of the cases against them. This new Network will coordinate support to journalists and media outlets throughout the life of their legal cases, more effectively leverage existing resources, and strengthen the whole ecosystem through the production of legal tools.
  • [H4] •Alinda Vermeer, Chief Executive Officer, Media Legal Defence Initiative
  • [H4] International protest movements such as #Metoo and Black Lives Matter have underscored the fact that press coverage can only be accurate, equitable and trustworthy if newsrooms are diverse. What is the state of diversity within newsrooms today? What work still needs to be done, and who can we learn from on this front?

  • [H4] From outright misogyny to death threats, female journalists continue to experience unprecedented levels of harassment - with dangerous consequences ranging from physical and psychological harm to a decrease in their actual contributions to journalism. What are the risks and realities of the violence exerted against female journalists both online and in the ‘real world’? What needs to be done to protect these journalists in this climate?
